Condolences

Larry Barton died February 9, 2010 in Corpus Christi, TX.  He was born January 19, 1950, to Howard and Lois Barton in Killeen.  He graduated from Killeen High school in 1968 and then earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Texas A&M University in 1972.  He worked for Woolworth’s in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri and was later in finance position at Central Texas College in Killeen.

In 1985, Mr. Barton was hired as the Assistant Director of the Student Union at Oklahoma State University, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Higher Education, graduating with a 4.0 average.   In 1993, after eight years with Oklahoma State University, he accepted a position with Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi where he went on to become the Assistant Vice President of University Services.  His concern was always for the students that they would have the best tools available to obtain a higher education.  He served as project coordinator for the Student Center, and the first two phases of Camden Student Housing.

Mr. Barton was instrumental in helping to grown the university from a two-year to a four-year school until his early retirement due to early onset of dementia in 2004.

Outside of work on of his greatest passions was hunting.  He loved the outdoors and harvested many bucks, turkeys and birds.   He loved to dance and was the smoothest on the floor.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Cindy; his three sons, Forrest Barton (Tiffany) of Killeen, Lance Barton (Sharon) of Corpus Christi and Brock Barton of Corpus Christi; his granddaughter, Brianne Barton of Corpus Christi; his brother, Jim Barton (Connie) of Lampasas; sisters, Glenda Bush (Jim) and Shirley Pipkin (Bill) of Killeen; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and grandparents.

Larry Barton was very supportive of the SWCBA and NACS while serving both Oklahoma State University and Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.  He will be missed by all.
